Ever notice how January can feel like it's three months long? The days are gray, the nights stretch forever, and even your motivation feels like it's gone into hibernation. You're not imagining it. This is a real thing. The winter blues are more than just a bad mood. They're a biological response to less sunlight, colder weather, and let's be honest, months of being cooped up indoors, wearing the same three sweaters on rotation. Welcome back to Midwestern Glowing. I'm Alicia. And I'm Nicole. Today we're diving into a topic that so many of us in the Midwest know all too well, how to battle the winter blues and bring some light, literally and figuratively back into your midlife routine. I'll be honest, by the time we hit January, I'm craving sunlight like it's a basic food group. I start fantasizing about beach vacations or even just walking outside without 12 layers on. Mm-hmm. Right, and there's an actual reason for that. Shorter daylight hours in the winter can disrupt your circadian rhythm, lower serotonin, and throw off your melatonin levels, and that translates to your body's natural light clock. Getting confused. That's why you might feel sluggish, moody, or even experience what's called seasonal affective disorder, or SAD for short. That acronym really nailed it because SAD is exactly how it feels, but it's important to know that it's a real physiological reaction, not a personality flaw. It doesn't mean you're unmotivated or dramatic. It means your body and brain are responding to darkness. Mm-hmm. And one of the most effective science back tools for this. Is light box therapy. Think of it as giving your body a little artificial sunshine. These light boxes mimic natural daylight, usually around 10,000 lux, and can help reset your body's internal clock, improve mood and boost energy. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna have to get one of those so that I can sit with my coffee in the morning while the light box is on, because I've definitely been impacted by this issue in the past. And if there's something that can act as a mood lamp for my soul, I'm totally in. Totally. I've used them before, and it is a nice way to start the day when you're craving more sunshine. The trick is to use it consistently. We talk about consistency a lot on this podcast. Ideally, within the first hour of waking up, using it for about 20 to 30 minutes can make a big difference. It's not a replacement for actual sunshine, but for those of us in the Midwest or anywhere that winter drags on, it can be a total game changer. Okay, so besides a light box or a tropical vacation, what else can help? Because I know a lot of us are feeling the slump right now. Yeah, absolutely. Let's talk about it in layers, light, movement, nourishment, and connection. So light, we just talked about. Movement is next. Gentle walks outside, even when it's cloudy. Help boost serotonin and get oxygen flowing. Or if you have a treadmill or a walking pad, you can walk inside. Movement is the key. Next nourishment. Nourishment means supporting your body with foods that stabilize blood sugar and mood. Think protein, fiber, and healthy fats, including omega threes. And connection. Don't underestimate how powerful it is to spend time with people who lift you up. Even a short chat or coffee date can help combat that sense of isolation that winter tends to bring. Yes, and this is where I found little rituals make all the difference diffusing essential oils in the morning. Putting on a cozy playlist, making an actual ritual out of your coffee or tea, it helps anchor you in something enjoyable when the days can feel monotonous and like the walls are starting to close in. exactly. And if you're listening and thinking, I don't even know where to start, grab our daily Glow Rituals Guide. It's free. It's full of simple daily rituals that you can easily weave into your day to help lift your mood and keep your energy steady. And if your winter blues are leaning more towards that exhausted, anxious, can't get outta your own head feeling. Our radiant rest yoga nidra sessions are amazing this time of year. They help your nervous system reset when you can't get real rest or sunshine. I love that because so often in winter what our bodies are asking for isn't more doing, it's more restorative time. That's just the energy of this time of year. Okay, so let's do a quick recap before we wrap up. If you're feeling the winter blues, number one, get some kind of light exposure every morning natural or through a light box. Number two, move your body daily, even gently. Number three, eat foods that support steady energy. Number four, stay connected to people who make you laugh and feel grounded. And last, number five, layer in small rituals that bring you comfort and joy. And remember, this season won't last forever. The light will return. In the meantime, focus on what helps you feel grounded and glow from the inside out. Even when the outside world feels gray, your glow reflection for this week, even the darkest winter will pass and the sun will rise again. This week, ask yourself, what brings light into my life right now, and how can I invite more of it in? We hope this episode helps you feel a little warmth and light even on the greatest days. If you loved this glow bite, share it with a friend who might be feeling the winter slump too. And don't forget to follow the show and leave us review. It helps more midlife women find their glow. Until next time, stay warm, stay grounded, and keep glowing through winter.
